Since April 2015, +600 people and organizations from +79 different countries have downloaded our Wood Mold Construction Manual!
In addition to our open-source technical resources and support on our website, we've financially supported and ran in-person Wood Mold projects with partner organizations in Bangladesh, Ecuador, Kenya, and Mali. We are always looking to create new partnerships and expand our impact.
After years of testing and refining both our product and our processes, we are scaling our impact. This year (2017) we plan to provide 30,000 additional people with clean drinking water access in southwest Bangladesh.
The combination of a serious need for easier access to safe drinking water and our confidence in our implementation partners, LEDARS Bangladesh, has led us to establish plans to distribute 200,000 BioSand Filters in Bangladesh alone, by the end of the year 2021! This ambitious goal will provide 1 Million people with safe and easy access to clean drinking water right inside their homes!
BioSand Filter Project Locations
Bangladesh is home to more than 157 million people, 56.8% of them live on less than $3.10 per day. We are working in Southwestern Bangladesh, where the drinking water situation is particularly dire. Due to rising sea levels and the country’s booming shrimp industry, the groundwater is becoming increasing saline. People are forced to either drink the saline groundwater from a well, drink bacteria contaminated surface water, or walk to and wait in long lines to get water from community slow-sand filters. We want to change that.
We've partnered with an award winning local organization, LEDARS Bangladesh, and trained them in the use of our Wood Mold and running BioSand Filter projects. Together we are providing the families of this region with safe drinking water access in their homes!
Our Impact in Bangladesh*
- 25 Wood Molds constructed
- 1,050 BioSand Filters constructed and installed
- 5,250 People given clean water access for +20 years
* This is an ongoing project. We will be exponentially increasing filter production in the coming years. 30,000 additional people will have an OHorizons BioSand Filter placed in their homes by the end of 2017!
The beautiful country of Ecuador is home to 15 million people, 25% of them living below the poverty line. Access to safe drinking water remains a problem in the rural highlands of the El Oro province. We trained a local Rotary chapter, Agua Limpia Ecuador, in the production of our Wood Mold so they could implement BioSand Filter projects in their remote, mountainous communities.
Our Impact in Ecuador
- 5 people trained in use of Wood Mold
- 5 Wood Molds constructed
- 200 BioSand Filters constructed
- 1000 People given clean water access for +20 years
Kenya has a population of approximately 45 million people and a very young population, with 73% of residents under 30 years old. In the spring of 2016, we established a partnership with the Daho Foundation, a Kenyan NGO, to run a pilot BioSand Filter project in the Ugunja subcounty of Western Kenya. This project’s initial goal is to provide BSFs to some of the most vulnerable community members in this region. After this pilot project we’ll determine if there’s opportunity to provide even more filters to local families. All 100 filters are scheduled to be installed and in-use by Fall 2016.
Our Impact in kenya
- 5 Wood Molds constructed
- 100 BioSand Filters constructed
- 500 People given clean water access for +20 years
Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa where half of its population lives on less than $1.25 per day. Access to clean water is a major problem, particularly in rural areas where 45% of people lack access to clean water. In 2014, a group of engineering students and professors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign traveled to Mali to train a rural village in the use of BioSand Filters with the hopes that local community members could start a filter business in the future.
When the group arrived in Mali, they realized the steel mold they had contracted to be made by a local welder had been made incorrectly. Searching for an alternative solution, they found us online, contacted us, and within a matter of days had downloaded our instruction manual, purchased the necessary materials, and successfully constructed several Wood Molds. They did all of this with very little instruction from OHorizons' staff and with no electricity!
Our Impact in Mali
- 8 people trained in use of Wood Mold
- 3 Wood Molds constructed
- 8 BioSand Filters constructed
- 40 People given clean water access for +20 years
